Upon first glance, Deacon’s Corner has all the trappings of a traditional diner: deliciously greasy breakfast food, darn fine cups of coffee, and good old-fashioned counter seating. Don’t be fooled, though—look a little further, and you’ll find there’s more than meets the eye. “The sign on the door and menu may say ‘diner’, and the interior looks much like a standard cafeteria, albeit a clean and retro-modern iteration,” says Mark Busse of Foodists, “[but] this is not your father’s greasy spoon.” Though Busse was referring to the original Gastown location, his description rings 100% true for the sister spot in Kitsilano, too.
Just take a look at the new dinner menu, which puts inventive twists on old favorites. The mac and cheese, for example, unexpectedly ropes in pesto and goat cheese, and the steak-and-cheese sandwich showcases tender, Angus-certified beef paired with swiss cheese, grilled onions, and mushrooms. Of course, if guests are simply in the mood for un-tinkered-with classics, they’ve got those, too, including a reuben sandwich and a beef burger that’s been ranked one of the area’s best by Vancity Buzz. Regardless of what winds up on their plates, diners can accompany any meal with a frosty bottle of cider, glass of wine, or pint of draft beer.
