The 15th annual Vancouver International Improv Festival features multiple shows each night—so many, there’s no recapping them all. Take a quick look at a small selection of improv troupes on the docket:
The Critical Hit Show! (October 7 at Performance Works): Comedians quest for glory in a Dungeons and Dragons–themed show that could call on audience members for more than just suggestions—they may have to play an unfortunate goblin as well.
VIIF Festival Ensemble (October 8 at Performance Works and October 11 at Studio 1398): Unlikely to perform together ever again, this troupe—a festival tradition—comprises performers from Toronto, New York, Amsterdam, Atlanta, and many more locations.
Blood Squad (October 9 at Performance Works): It was founded to lampoon the classic slasher genre, but Blood Squad now imitates horror flicks of all stripes, working only from a title suggested by the audience.
Bamboo Kids Club (October 10 at Studio 1398): At this show, the troupe debuts a new form: “Nine to Five,” in which two performers generate office gossip over a water cooler, then act out the circumstances that led to the tale.
Ferrari McSpeedy (October 10 at Performance Works): Energy and emotion are routinely turned up to 11 in the sketches and improv sets of this two-man Minneapolis act.
Like Father Like Son (October 11 at Performance Works): Rapid Fire Theatre, Edmonton’s longest-running improv company, performs one of its best beloved long forms—an absurd peek at a bedtime story between a father and son who seem to be about the same age.
