Backed by a big, brassy band, the full-voiced bombshell leaps from delicate high-octave tremolos to smoky lower registers in songs that seem pulled from a distant decade. From her new four-part album series, Learn to Fly, soon-to-be classics spill over, such as the daring “Catch Me If You Can,” the coquettish admonishment “Masquerade,” and the no-nonsense, bare-bones “But Baby, You Don’t Fool Me.” Jazzy bass interweaves with R&B-infused funk from beginning to end to get feet stepping and heads bobbing without hiring a giant to shake the theatre.
