Opening Gala hosted by Martin Short (February 8)

Even though legendary comedian and Order of Canada member Martin Short has two stars on Canada’s Walk of Fame, he deserves a galaxy more for all of the characters he’s created. Throughout his decades-long career, the veteran showman’s alter egos—including Jiminy Glick, Ed Grimley, Nathan Thurm, and razzle-dazzle Jackie Rogers, Jr.—have all taken on lives of their own. Recently seen in his reinvigorating performance on Saturday Night Live, Martin Short’s comedic genius is simply tireless and sharper than ever. For the Opening Gala, the magnetic funnyman plays ringleader to an evening of sketch, stand-up comedy, and music, featuring Matt Kirshen and Kristen Schaal from Flight of the Conchords and 30 Rock.

“My Nasty Valentine” hosted by Bob Saget (February 15)

By now, most comedy fans know that former Full House star and America’s Funniest Home Videos host Bob Saget is happiest when he’s working blue. Anyone who’s witnessed his more than 30-year stand-up career or his outrageous appearance in The Aristocrats can attest that Bob works blue until it turns purple. As a caustic gift to comedy fans and scorned romantics, Bob turns his rapier wit on Cupid as host of “My Nasty Valentine,” which also features cabaret/sex-comedy duo The Wet Spots and the curt jibes of popular Edmonton comic Toby Hargrave.

Margaret Cho’s “MOTHER” (February 16)

Gutsy, inflammatory, and always passionate, Margaret Cho has become one of the biggest icons in comedy and activism since taking the scene by storm in the early 1990s. From sitcom stints on the ground-breaking All American Girl and Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva to her Grammy-nominated comedy albums and one-woman off-Broadway shows such as Cho Dependent, the comedienne fearlessly speaks her mind about feminism, racism, and gay rights. Most of all, she never forgets to inject her hot-button topics with hair-raising hilarity. For her latest stand-up show, MOTHER, Margaret puts sacred cows upon a fiery spit in a ruthless examination of maternity in modern culture, politics, and celebrities.

Vancouver Comedy & Arts Fest

A comedy institution since 2004, the Vancouver Comedy & Arts Fest amasses up-and-coming talent alongside established stars for a festive celebration of the international comedy circuit and the guts it has busted. Set against the city’s majestic backdrop, the 10-day humour retreat has attracted many of today’s biggest comedy stars, along with the forefathers who set the stage for modern stand-ups. Past acts have included luminaries such as Steve Martin, Zach Galifianakis, Carol Burnett, and Flight of the Conchords.

The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts

Rich, purple seats and a sleek arched ceiling accent The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts’ stunning auditorium, treating eyes before Broadway shows, concerts, and dance performances even take the stage. The modern facilities owe their impressive structure to lauded architect Moshe Safdie, who also filled the sweeping confines with a marbled staircase and mirrored walls that help patrons see if their opera glasses are on upside-down.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon’s mobile app.
