Grammy-winning conductor and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s music director Bramwell Tovey leads his musical charges through Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera Trial by Jury, prefaced with the impressionistic strains of Ireland’s Piano Concerto by Peter Longworth. The UBC Opera Ensemble and baritone Richard Stuart also join melody makers for a concert rendition of the famed British operetta.
Guest conductor Christoph König picks up the baton for “Brahms and Dvorak,” welcoming esteemed cellist Jeff Tyzik to the stage before bringing Dvorak’s Cello Concerto alive. Additionally, a pre-concert lecture by assistant conductor Pierre Simard enlightens audiences with info about Brahms, Dvorak, and their music.
Finally, principal pops conductor Jeff Tyzik and the symphony join renowned jazz trumpeter Alan Vizzutti to play an eclectic selection of beloved jazz and jazz-inspired tunes including Carnival of Venice, Fanfare for the Common Man, and selections from the song statistically most likely to be stuck in audience member’s heads.
Concerts take place in the picturesque Orpheum Theatre, a National Heritage Site and the home of the Symphony since 1977. The theatre’s soaring arches and chandelier contrast with the vintage feel of the worn wooden floor, delightfully juxtaposing elegance and rustication like a Rolls Royce resting on front-lawn cinderblocks.
