Research conducted by UBC’s faculties of Arts and Science metamorphoses into public knowledge at four campus museums and gardens. Guests browse the Museum of Anthropology’s temporary and permanent exhibits after passing the entrance’s commissioned Musqueam artworks and successfully answering the riddles of professorial guards. The Multiversity Galleries showcase more than 10,000 objects from cultures around the world, and the Great Hall’s 15-metre-high glass walls host music, drama, and dance performances and house Northwest Coast totem poles. The staff at the UBC Botanical Garden invites visitors to explore a curated collection of 12,000+ plants hailing from temperate forests and gardens in British Columbia, North America, and Asia. Visitors receive a discount on admission to the Greenheart Forest Canopy Walkway, a 308-metre aerial trail system that winds through forest canopies to grant a pterodactyl’s-eye view of the West Coast ecosystem.
Step into the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, where two million specimens form six collections staffed and serenaded daily by knowledgeable volunteers and interpreters. Learn about fungi, marine creatures, and fossils before visiting the Cowan Tetrapod Collection, which has more than 40,000 specimens of vertebrates, including the enormous skeleton of a blue whale. When open for the season in April, guests pass an authentic Japanese garden in the Nitobe Memorial Garden and staff members prune and sculpt local vegetation into traditional Japanese styles and tend to various maple and cherry trees, azaleas, and irises.
