During three-hour odysseys, Capilano Riverboarding’s owner Skye MacLeod and his team of professional guides shepherd students through the twisting whitewater rapids and narrow canyons of Capilano River. Groups meet at the launch site to change into wetsuits and provided neoprene socks, and lifejackets before guides discourse on river safety, hand signals, and how to exploit the river’s deepest fears. Aquatic pupils don helmets and fins, seize their boards, and embark on 30-minute upstream training sessions to acquaint themselves with paddling and manoeuvring. Groups avoid flash mobs of spawning trout as they follow guides through the churning wakes of Class III and IV rapids that run 4 kilometres into the forest. At the exit point, adventurers paddle to shore to hop onto transportation which spits out river rats back at the starting point to set off on up to two additional river runs.
Students must be fit and able swimmers, and must be able to make the brief hike from the exit site to their car transport. All of Capilano Riverboarding’s guides are certified in swift-water rescue, and can confidently lead their charges in all seasons and various weather conditions. Though he has navigated rivers in South America and Asia, Skye MacLeod grew up by the Capilano River, and has learned to respect it in much the same way as bakers respect their flamethrowers.
