With today’s Groupon: for $20, you get two roller-derby tickets to see the Terminal City Roller Girls on Saturday, July 9 at Minoru Arena in Richmond (a $40 value at the door, a $30 value in advance). Tickets for children 6–12 normally are $10, and children 5 and younger get free admission.

A member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and Vancouver’s first female roller-derby league, the Terminal City Roller Girls maintain four house teams composed of more than 60 local skate mavens from all walks of life. Doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 9 as the TCRG All-Stars take on Portland’s Axles of Annihilation for an evening of full-contact debates on elbow-pad etiquette. Action starts at 6:30 p.m. when rookies from all four teams meet for a prebout scrimmage. The main event ensues at 7:30 p.m. as TCRG’s top rollers collide on the flat track with Portland’s finest and any lost car-side diner waitresses. Gals get unladylike as they shoulder-check and hip-bump one another with minimal padding but maximum panache, whipping jammers through the scrum to surpass the opponent’s pivot skater while simultaneously waylaying the opposing jammer. Over the course of each 30-minute half, damsels uphold such monikers as Apocaliz Now, Trixi Trippin Chix, and Tiki TimeBomb.

A player-owned-and-operated league, the TCRG seeks to empower individuals on and off the track by working with local charities such as Kids Up Front, which pairs underprivileged children with tickets to the theater, sporting events, and culture events.
