Eight 1/2 turns its back on microwaves and deep-fryers to serve up fresh, locally sourced Pacific Rim fare. Dive forkfirst into dinner with a small plate such as the four-cheese macaroni ($7.50), bringing together mascarpone, brie, parmesan, and bocconcini—the John, Paul, George, and Norman of the dairy world. Turophiles can quench further cheese desires with a thin-crust pizza such as the marketplace ($10.50), boasting goat cheese and roasted vegetables atop a tomato and pesto base, while meat-mavens can peruse eight 1/2’s array of large plates. The grass-fed steak ($18.50) pairs a 10 oz. free-range slab of beef with roasted-garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies, while the lemongrass mussels ($16.50) steams the bivalves in lemongrass, galangal, red chilies, fresh lime juice, and Thai basil. End dinner with banana bread pudding ($7.50), or fuel up for a night of street-corner breakdancing with a selection from eight 1/2’s wine list or collection of cocktails and beer.

Nestled in a century-old building and adorned with century-old flat-screen TVs, eight 1/2’s elegant interior wraps its guests in a cocoon of exposed brick walls, soft lighting, and wood beamwork. Lasso up fellow Fellini fanatics and discuss how Amarcord would’ve worked better as a buddy-cop comedy over fresh cuisine and flavourful cocktails at eight 1/2.
